Diwali Muhurat Trading 2020

Diwali is a major festival in India and it is considered to bring in lots of good luck, prosperity and wealth. Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth,  is worshipped on this day. Stock exchanges are closed on this day but open for just an hour for “Diwali Mahurat Trading”. By the word, ‘mahurat’ is meant a favorable and lucky time when the planets are aligned perfectly to ensure best of luck and optimistic results”. It is believed that trading done on this day brings in wealth and prosperity in the upcoming year. No wonder, people wait for this special hour to trade.

Mahurat trading is a unique feature of Indian market only. As the day also marks the beginning of the new Hindu calendar called “samvat”,  many new investors, who wish to start investing in the market for long term, make their trading debut on this day. It is seen that markets usually show an upward trend on this day. Since the trading volumes at this auspicious hour are high, it is a good time to sell or buy stocks.

The brokers and share traders make extensive preparations to celebrate this day. The account books are also worshipped. Rangolis are made in offices and diyas are lighted. Sweets and dry fruit hampers are distributed among the staff, family members and friends. Everyone prays to Goddess lakhsmi and seeks her blessings for prosperity in the coming year. After the Lakshmi puja, investors purchase shares of some strong companies that can help them to generate good returns in the long run.

The timing for mahurat trading is notified well in advance by the stock exchanges. Asia’s oldest stock exchange, Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has been conducting Mahurat trading since the year 1957 and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) has been holding these sessions since 1992.
